Worship

Times

For information on the daily cycle of worship at Belfast Cathedral please see below. Please note that weekday Choral Evensong takes place only during term-time. On Saturdays, and when schools are on holiday, the 5.30pm Evening Office is said.
Sundays
Our week begins on the day of Resurrection. We celebrate the Eucharist at 8am, 10am and 11am and Choral Evensong at 3.30pm.
At 8am we gather in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit for a said service, according to Order 2 of the Book of Common Prayer of the Church of Ireland.
The 10am Eucharist, also said, is held in the Chapel of Unity, and follows the old Order 1 form.
The 11am, in the main cathedral, is sung, and often features one of the Cathedral Chapter as preacher.
The 3.30pm Choral Evensong follows the unique Anglican office of Evening Prayer in its traditional form.In this service the congregation is largely led by the choir who, through scriptural canticles, psalms, verses and responses, provide an opportunity for the congregation to contemplate the message of the scriptures of the day in the context of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. It truly is a brief moment of tranquility and peace before the working week beckons.
At various times through the year the cathedral hosts special services for various organisations,
and these will be listed. Such services often have a civic element, and can draw quite a crowd! Although some services stand alone, we strive to maintain this Evensong model, which adds a distinctive and incomparable dignity to the occasion being marked. It is a stirring experience to be present at such occasions and savour traditional Anglican worship at its finest.
Weekdays
During the week we maintain a steady rhythm of worship, with the Morning Office daily at 8.10am in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, followed by the Eucharist (said) at 8.30am in the Chapel of Unity.
At 1pm there is a brief liturgy of readings and prayers led by lay volunteers on behalf of the entire community on that occasion. On Wednesdays and Holy Days there is a celebration of Holy Communion Order 1 in the Chapel of Unity.
Sung Compline (Monday and Tuesday, 5.45pm) and Choral Evensong (Wednesday to Friday, 5.30pm) form the offering of worship during term-time, and feature members of our Boys and Girls Choirs. As on Sundays, this provides a little refuge from the mayhem of the working week, where again congregants are ministered to by our choirs and afforded the solace of spoken and sung prayer and scriptural anchoring.
On Saturday, and outside term-time, the Evening Office is said daily at 5.30pm in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
