Buckfast Abbey is a Benedictine monastery set on the edge of Dartmoor. The monks welcome visitors to their Abbey Church. The Church was built by the monks themselves (most of the work being done by just four of them!)The church was finished in 1938 and stands on the exact foundations of the medieval one.
A large monastery flourished at Buckfast throughout the Middle Ages until it was closed down by King Henry VIII in 1539.
Visitors may walk around the grounds of the Abbey. There is a Lavender Garden and Sensory and Physic gardens in the medieval style.
There is a large restaurant selling home cooked foods. An exhibition and video presentation. In addition there are three unique shops - one selling quality gifts, one selling books, cards and religious items and one selling monastic produce from all over Europe.
