From north or south - M5 exits 11, 11A or 12.
From east or west - A40

By rail or coach
Mainline railway station and national coach station are within easy walking distance.


St Oswald’s Park & Ride is signposted from the ring road.
There are several other car parks in the city centre.
The coach drop-off point is also situated in St Oswald’s Park & Ride facility.
There are three disabled parking spaces in the cathedral precincts. Call the Cathedral office on 01452 528095.

Arranged visits

Guided Tours

Individual visitors and small family groups can ask for a free TOUR at any time from 10.45 - 3.00 (winter), and from 10.30 - 4.00 (April - October). Free crypt tours may also be requested at these times.

Tours to the top of the TOWER are available at set times April - October (small charge - see website for details).

The TREASURY is open, free of charge, April - October (not Sundays)

The Exhibition “Face to Face”, which includes a fascinating ‘whispering gallery’ is also open April - October (small charge to adults, children free)


Group tours with a trained cathedral guide can be pre-booked at £4.50 per adult, students £3.50. Booked tours can include the crypt, cloisters and Treasury, and, for an additional charge, the Tower and/or the “Face to Face” Exhibition.

Special interest tours are also offered, e.g. stained glass, monastic life, architectural history, Harry Potter. These must be pre-booked.

School Visits

School visits arranged by our Education Centre are geared to meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum.

Facilities for disabled

    A free welcome leaflet, available at the door, lists the facilities available for visitors with disabilities, and includes a plan of the route around the building accessible to wheelchair users.
    Touch & Hear centre plus acoustic walk-round tape for the visually impaired. Also large-print and Braille guides.
    Loop system in the Nave and the Quire.
    Wheelchair lifts to East End and Quire.
    Disabled toilets at cloister level and coffee shop level.
