Visitor Hours

Minster Opening Times

The Minster is open daily for early services from 9.00am and usually closes at 6.30pm.

Charges are made for those visiting for sightseeing purposes. No charges are made for those who wish to enter the Minster to pray or light a candle. Please ask a member of staff on arrival.

For sightseeing in the Minster
Mon - Sat: 9.00am (9.30am November- March) - last entry 5.00pm Sunday: 12.00noon - 3.45pm

No sightseeing on Good Friday and Easter Sunday or on Sundays before 12.00noon

PLEASE NOTE: there are occassions when the Minster is open for services only, and when the Chapter House is closed for meetings or events. Please contact us in advance to check if open or visit our events calendar


Ticket Options

There are a range of ticket options to suit every visitor, from families to individuals and those wanting to visit more of York�s brilliant attractions. Plus, your admission ticket to York Minster is valid for 12 months! A free guided tour is included in your admission price, subject to availability.

It costs �21,000 a day to run York Minster. Your admission charge directly supports the future of this holy and historic building. In these circumstances we trust you will understand why we charge for entry. No charges are made for those who wish to enter York Minster to pray, light a candle, or attend a service.

Guided Tours

Free guided tours by volunteer guides (Groups and school parties must pre-book).

Pre-book online at

Pre-booking allows your group to reserve guides, book visits to the Undercroft and take advantage of price discounts. Pre-booking is also strongly advisable since both service and opening times can vary.


Groups are welcome to visit between 9:00 and 17:00 in Summer, and 9:30 and 17:00 in Winter. Please be aware that cathedral access will be limited during services. On Sunday, sightseeing tours should begin after 12:30.

School Visits

N.B. There is usually no sung service on Mondays during term time. Telephone 01904 557200 if you wish to check whether the choir is singing on a particular day.

Facilities for disabled

    A Touch and Hearing Centre includes a tactile model of the Minster with audio tape commentary and a Braille guidebook. The Centre can be used on request at the Group Desk. Acoustic guides are available to various parts of the Minster. Induction loops are located throughout all the main ground floor areas. Leaflets and service sheets are available in large print. With notice, occasional guided tours can be arranged for visually impaired visitors.
    Assistance dogs are welcomed at the Minster.
    Wheelchairs for use in the Minster are available on request.
    Limited disabled parking facilities are available.

    A permanent stone ramp has been constructed at the West End of the Minster and outside the South door. Inside the cathedral there is a ramp from the Nave into the Quire and from the North Transept to the Chapter House.

    The Undercroft is fully accessible with lifts.
