Travel information

Wells is easily reached by public transport with regular bus services to and from Bath (No. 173) Bristol (No. 376) and more locally Shepton Mallet (No. 161/162).

Nearest train stations are at Bath Spa, Bristol Temple Meads and Castle Cary.

Bristol Airport is situated about 25 miles from Wells.


Parking in Wells can be difficult and the ensuing walk to the Cathedral may take as long as 10 minutes. However, if travelling by coach your driver can drop you in Sadler Street, just off Cathedral Green.

Guided Tours

There are regular guided tours throughout the year which are free of charge and are of approximately 45 minutes duration. Cathedral Guides are available for booked groups by prior arrangement.


All groups are encouraged to book a visit to ensure facilities are open to them and to be advised of any restrictions of access that might apply. Please use our online form:

We encourage group visits between 10.00am and 4.00pm, Monday to Saturday. Groups are welcome outside these times but free access to parts of the cathedral is restricted as they may be in use for the primary purpose of worship. Groups and individuals are always welcome to attend services

School Visits

We specialise in tailoring every visit, so please ring to agree the most suitable date and programme for your party.

    The West Cloister houses a well stocked Gift Shop and the Cloister Restaurant where lunches, teas and light refreshments are available on most days of the year.

Facilities for disabled

    Most parts of the interior of the Cathedral are accessible to wheelchairs via the Northwest door (ramped entrance left side of the West Front). There is a toilet for those with disabilities by the West Cloister. Some interpretive material is available in tactile format and some in braille. A wheelchair is available for loan. Audio-tour cassettes for those with a visual impairment may be borrowed. Guide dogs are permitted. The cathedral has a loop system installed. Any person wishing to visit the Cathedral, attend a service or other event, who requires assistance or needs further details, may find it useful to contact the Cathedral office.
